Aaron King, AKA District Boy, recorded a personal milestone this weekend by snagging his 100th ball of the season. Attending the Cubs-Nationals game at his hometown stadium, Nationals Park, King got his 100th ball on a throw from Julian Tavarez. As he describes it, "Tavarez had just finished some drills in the outfield with the other relievers and as he was walking back to the foul line he looked up and made an over-exaggerated throw me from about 40 yards away."
Currently having 101 balls for the 2009 season, King is in 7th place on the season leaderboard. His lifetime total is 389, so another milestone, 500 career balls, is within sight. "When the season started I wanted to get to 500, and right now I'm in line with finishing at around 480 or so," he said. "I still think I can though, and I'm definitely going to attend more than fifteen games in the second half."
In addition to reaching 100 balls this season, he has also established his career high, recording 17 balls on May 19th in Washington. Everything seemed to go right for him that day. He got 3 easter eggs upon entering the stadium, snagged 9 balls during BP, got 2 third-out balls, and got 3 balls from umpires after the game.
His most memorable ball of the season was the third-out ball he got from Ryan Zimmerman in the May 19th game. Going for third-out balls for the first time of the year, King was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time. "At the end of the first, when Ryan Zimmerman's throw landed in my glove, my heart was racing and I just felt completely elated. A good day," he said.
