Fischer Visits Florida, Snags 100th Career Ball
New York Ballhawk Hits Triple Digits in First Appearance at Tropicana Field
by Alan Schuster, July 7, 2011
Fischer shows off his 100th career ball from the right field bleachers at Tropicana Field. It seems like just yesterday that Mateo Fischer, a 16 year-old ballhawk from New York, was learning the ballhawking trade from Zack Hample. It's hard to believe that just a short time later Fischer has snagged over 100 balls in his career. Last week in Tampa, he joined the 100 ball club on his first ever snag at Tropicana Field. Just a few minutes after entering the gate at the Trop he got Jeremy Hellickson to toss him a ball in the left field bleachers. After the milestone snag he continued a great day of ballhawking by snagging four more balls including two clean catches of BP homers hit by Kelly Shoppach and Lance Berkman. After 18 games this season Fischer has already surpassed last season's total. His average of 3.22 balls per game is a solid improvement over last year's 2.8 average. He also currently has an active streak of 43 straight games with at least one ball. To read more about Mateo Fischer's 100th ball, visit his blog
